Smoldering edges

Smoldering edges
Midnight moon oversees the fire1
dying
wind stirs
embers dance
smoldering edges
printed pictures (matte,
ripped from their frame)
taken on their fifth date
back when the smiles were
real
a slow burn
embers dance

The line "back when the smiles were real" quietly changes the whole poem. It turns the embers into something more than a fire—they become the last warmth of a memory that hasn't completely gone out.
